THE TEMPORARY MUSEUM

In mid-March 2001, the contents of the former Museum building were moved to their temporary quarters at near the entry to Gate 1 at the Patuxent River Naval Air Station. The Temporary Museum now occupies the two adjoining metal storage buildings on the new Museum site. It was officially opened in a formal ceremony on May 25, 2001.

These two warehouses were refurbished to house the Museum’s exhibits and operations until such time as the new Museum is designed and built. The temporary quarters were required to permit the State to widen the access roads in the vicinity of the former museum site near Gate 2.

The new Temporary Museum contains about 10,000 sq. ft. of exhibit and display space, which is a better than 50% increase. This allows the museum adequate space to experiment with new exhibit ideas in preparation for the new Museum.

Visitors enter through Building B. All of the main exhibits are predominantly  in Building A. The layout of the exhibits are essentially be the same as they were in the original Museum building. (See panorama above)  Building A will also include the auditorium for movies, meetings and ceremonies.

We look forward to a steady stream of visitors to see the outdoor display aircraft and the exhibits in the temporary Museum.
